Just saw this on my Facebook feed since I guess one of my friends knows the driver of the Civic which was involved in this accident. Truly tragic, although I am curious to know if the girl who was killed was sitting in the trunk-mounted jumpseat seeing as the body of the car is intact but the trunk is absolutely demolished.

Any thoughts, Oppo? I know for one that I’ll probably not sit in the trunk of a Tesla knowing they can be crumpled this badly.

A Civic did that to the rear end? Oh my... that is nuts.

Edit: I just read the linked article. A Tahoe destroyed the back. Still, crazy an at speed rear end collision did that much damage. The article sad back seat, so I’m not sure if they were rear or actual back seat. If they were back seat and they passed away I’d really have to question the safety of these cars. What a damn tragedy....

A Tahoe is heavy. But how fast was it going. Is there crash tests for rear impacts? I can’t find any.

It was a Tahoe that impacted the rear. This drove the Tesla forward into the Civic.

Yeah, if she died in the second row then it must have been rebound from impact or internal injuries since the body shell looks pretty solid.

Good question and I don’t think so. Really an oversight by the government especially considering so many third-row seats nowadays are dangerous when rear ended, especially ones on the Euro market where space is at a minimum so the seats literally touch the rear windshield.

I agree, see edit. I think you may have read my reply before the edit.

She may have had serious internal injuries from the amount of force. Could have been a spinal or neck injury. Could have also been cardiac arrest due to organ failure. Gruesome stuff. My guess is that she was in the real back seat, since most people don’t actually option the jumpseats to my knowledge.

I was wondering. I checked IIHS, NHSTA, and EuroNCAP and didn’t see anything about rear end collisions at all. Some of those third rows are really close to the hatch even on American cars. I’ll keep looking for rear ended Teslas but I’ll see what I can find.

The optional trunk seats can’t be installed after you buy a Tesla because they strengthen the rear frame at the factory. My guess is that this Tesla didn’t have the trunk seats, and the kids were in the second row.

But they can come fitted before purchase, right? It’s hard to say but the second row seems likely otherwise the other girl would also probably not be alive as well given the damage.

Oh, got it. I wasn’t sure how popular they are since Elon was advocating for them left and right when they were first revealed. Makes more sense if she was sitting in the second row, though, since the other child would probably be far worse off had they both been in the trunk. Internal injuries are super nasty stuff, almost impossible to protect against in severe accidents like this also.

That’s a lot of delta, like 45+ mph

If they had been in the third row, they would have cut the rear of the car open to get the bodies out before towing it away, there is no way they could have been extracted from the third row wit the car like that. They were almost certainly in the 2nd row, you can see the rear headrest pushed forward until it is halfway into the door window opening.

I work in insurance and see a lot of bad wrecks. No matter how many safety features a car has there comes a point when there is just too much force and mass at work and it is more than a human body can take.
